If you mostly found out about Isaac Toups and Toups Meatery from TV and the Internet like me... the hype is real. To lead off, the people here are friendly. Our waiter took the time to chat with us, and the person I was with chatted with both Isaac and Amanda. She didn't know either of them; I might have fangirled. They were also willing to seat us for damn near 3.5 hours, as we came during happy hour (Limited menu) and wanted dinner as well. It probably helped that we continually ordered drinks and food. They are also willing to go above and beyond for service and dietary needs. My partner cannot eat trans fats, and that includes a lot of animal/poultry proteins. She ordered the Lump Crab Salad and they were able to remake the salad dressing in a way that removed all traces of transfatty acids. We started with Duck Rilletes, Boudin Balls, and a Cheese Board. The Cheese Board was great. Three different cheeses, a variety of pickles, and two different jams. St. James Cheesery does good work. The Rilletes might have been my least favorite thing, but that's akin to being the least attractive supermodel. The texture is soft, meaty, and comes across a bit like an open face hamburger with the onions, pickles, jalapenos, and mustard they provide. Even as the least favorite thing I got, this was still excellent. The Boudin was looser than I expected from something that's sausage, but was still delicious. A little crunch, a lot of meaty goodness, and the brightness from the squash pickle and mustard works great here. For dinner, we got Rillons and Lamb Neck for myself, and my partner got the Gulf Shrimp and Lump Crab Salad. She was delighted by her entrees, and I would say the same for myself. The Rillons were meaty and heavy and carried a weight to them. They were however, utterly delightful with just enough sweetness to balance out the fact that you're eating huge chunks of pork belly. The Lamb Neck was fall apart tender and had a consistency like barbacoa. I didn't bother to use a knife eating it. It's incredibly flavorful, tender meat served on a bed of white beans. Toups Meatery is an incredibly warm, friendly, hospitable environment. The personality implied from his videos and television presence are the real deal and carry into his daily work. This would be the ideal place for a meal after a fun day, and for a tourist looking to experience classic Cajun cooking, you've found your destination.
Fantastic!! Great craft cocktails with very clever titles. Chicken liver mousse and turkey necks very tasty for our appetizer. The lamb neck!!! Wow!!! So good!!! Hats off for stellar work they are doing for the community; providing hundreds of meals so kids can stay nourished. Donations accepted via CashApp & Venmo.
Amazing. Amazing food, service, and ambiance. We parked at the main city park, and happened to stumble upon this gem after walking around. Decided to sit down and have some appetizers and drinks and are very happy we did Our server Gabe greeted us immediately and was very kind and gave us great suggestions for food/drink options. We ended up getting the meat board (amazing), cucumber salad (refreshing), and the Kill Dill and Porkchop and apple sauce drinks. Everything was a 10/10. Ps - ask how they make the porkchop and apple sauce drink - it will blow you away! Highly recommend trying this place if you are in NOLA! Ended up sitting outside on the patio since we had our dog with us, but with the fan and cover it made us comfortable.
After seeing Toups on Action Bronson's show F*ck That's Delicious, I knew I had to experience the lamb neck someday. For seven years, the image of this lamb neck lived in my head rent-free, and I finally made it to try it myself. The way Chef Isaac spoke so earnestly about his food on the show, yet choke-slammed that lamb neck onto a roaring hot pan, perfectly reflected the duality of the dish itself - tender, melt-in-your-mouth meat balanced with rich, robust flavors from the seasoning and white beans on the side. Chef Isaac was kind enough to chat for a bit, and the staff was funny and attentive. The vibe of the space is authentic and more local than other places I've visited. I highly recommend the LNE (Lamb Neck Experience) to anyone looking for a delicious and memorable dish in New Orleans.
Good food, great location, nice people. We got meat plate, followed by lambs neck, duck, and wagyu steaks. I loved the meat plate. Lots of different things to try. It's heavy though--we split among 4 and we're pretty full after. Steaks were well cooked. Lamb neck was incredibly tender but fattier than I expected (never had a lambs neck before!). Duck was good, very sweet. Food probably would be 4/5 star--good but not exceptional (and... hate to say it... but I prefer the food across the street at blue oak for a lower price point too ) What pushes them to 5 stars is how exceptional they were at checking everything for a long list of allergies--they truly went above and beyond and the chef was very attentive. Will definitely come again!
We took some relatives here as they had never been to a restaurant like this before. They loved it as we knew they would. We started with the charcuterie board which was very exciting and flavorful. Our server recommended the fried turkey neck with pepper jelly. That was interesting. It was not a favorite of all of us, but we found very creative. We then chose the lamb, the veal, the chicken and the double cut pork chop as our entrees. Everything was fantastic and fresh and full of flavor. I can not wait to go back.
We were seated and greeted quickly upon arrival. It was pretty backed so without reservations we were only able sit at the bar. I was pretty impressed by the unique menu items and stalked the plates of others while trying to make a decision on what I wanted to order. Everything looked and sounded good. I was pretty hungry and prepared to order a few items but filled up quickly. It was a bit noisy but they had a great selection of music playing and the bartenders were attentive, polite, and helpful with our meal selections. The turkey necks had a crispy fried breaded coating which was seasoned well and very tender and flavorful underneath the breading. It paired well with the sour beer and cornbread. The cornbread came out a bit late as the waitress/bartender forgot to put it in but I saved the last turkey neck to pair with it. The fried redfish sandwich was pretty tasty though the sauce overpowered the sandwich. Next time I'd tell them to go easy on the sauce, or put it on the side. We didn't care for the chips but overall we'll likely go back and try a few different items.
TLDR: Best damn cracklins in town. I don't even know how many different types of meaty goodness I had at Toups, but everything was so f*cking tasty. We ordered some cracklins in addition to the Meatery Board (bc clearly I need more saturated fats) and MAN, was that the right move. Can't put into words the emotions I felt when I bit into the piping hot and crispy but juicy hunk of cracklins. It was like I had finally found the love of my life (sorry, bf, but cracklins and I have a special bond). The Chicken Liver Mousse with the special mustard was also otherworldly... just yum... but then again, so were the pickles and hog's head cheese, which is DEFINITELY not cheese--but in a good way. If you don't like pickles or sour things in general, maybe skip the Meatery Board, though. If you're fan of the salt, fat, acid, and heat elements, you're in for a treat! And then on top of that (I know, we ordered enough food for an entire village) we ate the Gulf Seafood Couvillon, which the friendly server highly recommended (and I can totally see why). It was a very umami-filled stew with crab fat rice and plenty of seafood. It was such a treat for our souls. Tip: Wear stretchy pants. Trust me.
The food here is absolutely 5/5 stars it's so dang good. If you are looking for veggie or vegan options, this is absolutely NOT the place for you. Oh my lord Isaac Toups is a meat god. My husband uses his recipe for dirty rice so we'd been wanting to try this place for a while. We weren't disappointed. The chicken oysters were BOMB! This burger cured my hangover and brought me back to life. All of the food was absolutely outstanding. They have a patio that is super cute and would have been lovely to sit on if it wasn't raining when we came. Oh well! next time! There is one tiny drawback to this place. The restaurant itself though is kinda small. They have one single bathroom for everyone. That's it. One toilet for all. It can get smelly and a little gross. If you can look past that or just hold it til you get home, GO GO GO!
